The Small Business Squarespace SEO Checklist

Squarespace SEO comes down to a handful of things that matter: clean page titles and meta descriptions, proper header use, image alt text, a submitted sitemap, and basic local SEO if you're a location-based business. Most of this takes an afternoon to set up properly, yet it's one of the most commonly skipped steps for small business owners, who tend to pour their energy into social media and sales instead.

There's also a shift happening right now that most small businesses haven't caught up to yet: people are increasingly searching through AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude instead of typing into Google. The fundamentals below still matter for traditional search, but they matter even more for how AI platforms decide who to recommend.

On-Page SEO Checklist

☐  Unique title tags on every page. Each page should have its own descriptive title, not a repeated default like “Home” or “Page 2.”

☐  Written meta descriptions. Every page should have a short, specific description of what it covers, not a blank field left for Google to guess.

☐  Proper header structure (H1, H2, H3). Each page should have one clear H1, with H2s and H3s used to organize sections logically, not just for visual styling.

☐  Image alt text on every image. Every image should have a written description, both for accessibility and because search engines can't “see” images without it.

☐  Clean, readable URL slugs. URLs should reflect the page content in plain words (like /services), not default strings of numbers or symbols.

Content & Structure Checklist

☐  Clear page hierarchy. Your navigation should reflect how a visitor (and a search engine) actually understands your business, not just however pages happened to get built.

☐  Internal linking between related pages. Pages should link to each other where it makes sense, helping both visitors and search engines understand how your content connects.

☐  A blog, used consistently. A blog gives you a reason to keep publishing fresh, keyword-relevant content over time, which search engines and AI answer engines both reward.

Technical & Site Health Checklist

☐  Mobile responsiveness. Squarespace handles this by default, but it's worth double-checking your site actually looks and functions well on a phone.

☐  SSL enabled (https, not http). Squarespace includes this automatically, but confirm it's active, since it affects both trust and rankings.

☐  Sitemap submitted to Google Search Console. This is a simple, often-skipped step that tells Google exactly what pages exist on your site.

Local SEO Checklist

☐  Google Business Profile set up and verified. This is what shows up when someone searches your business name or “[your service] near me.”

☐  Consistent name, address, and phone number (NAP) across your website, Google Business Profile, and any other directories you're listed in.

☐  Location mentioned naturally in your copy, not stuffed in, but genuinely present where it makes sense (your About page, footer, service pages).

Why AI Search Changes the Game (And What to Do About It)

Here's something worth paying real attention to: my last four leads all came through AI search, not traditional Google results. That's not a small trend anymore. People are asking ChatGPT, Claude, and similar tools questions like “who's a good Squarespace web designer in New York” the same way they used to type it into Google, and increasingly, the AI just gives them a direct answer instead of a list of links to click through.

That changes what actually matters. A few things specifically help with AI visibility, beyond standard SEO:

☐  Answer questions directly and clearly in your content. AI tools tend to pull from pages that state things plainly, early, rather than burying the answer three paragraphs in.

☐  Use an FAQ section with real questions people actually ask. This maps almost directly onto how people phrase questions to AI tools in the first place.

☐  Keep your name, business, and location consistent everywhere. AI tools rely heavily on this kind of repeated, consistent signal to confidently associate you with a specific service and area.

☐  Get mentioned elsewhere, not just on your own site. Directories, guest posts, and other sites referencing your business all feed into how confidently an AI tool recommends you.

Traditional SEO and AEO overlap more than they conflict, but AEO rewards clarity and directness even more heavily. A page stuffed with keywords but light on a real, plain-language answer tends to underperform in AI search, even if it still does fine in traditional Google rankings.

Common Mistakes That Hurt Squarespace SEO

The single biggest mistake I see, consistently, is small business owners skipping SEO entirely. It's understandable. When you're running a business, your attention naturally goes toward sales and content marketing through social media, since those feel more immediate. SEO is slower and less visible, so it gets pushed aside. But that gap is exactly where a lot of businesses lose potential clients, not just to competitors who show up higher in Google, but increasingly to competitors who show up as the answer when someone asks an AI tool for a recommendation.

What's Already Included When You Work With Me

Basic SEO setup is included in every $3,500 project: title tags, meta descriptions, proper header structure, and the technical foundations covered above. Google Business Profile setup is available as an add-on for businesses that need that local visibility specifically.

My own website is proof of what these fundamentals can actually do. It's well optimized for both traditional and AI search, and the results speak for themselves: my last four leads came directly from people searching through AI platforms like ChatGPT and Claude, not Google. That's not a coincidence. It's a direct result of building a site around clarity, consistency, and directly answering the questions people are actually asking, which happens to be exactly what both search engines and AI platforms reward.
